The customer is an analytical instruments business unit of a world leader in the design and manufacture of electronics, instrumentation, communication and propulsion products.

| The Challenge |
The customer needed a brisk transition from existing disparate systems to a dynamic, Profibus-compliant, real-time, gas analytics ecosystem. The ecosystem would allow PC-based gas analyzers, valve boxes and the programmable logic controller (PLC) to “talk” to each other, integrate with networks and external hardware and software, and sample gas selections. Working with remote teams in the US, Germany and the Netherlands, we needed to develop, in less than four months, a ready-to-go solution, requiring no additional programming effort by the customer.

| The Solution |
We proposed a smart Profibus interface card with supporting application layer that would pull together the customer’s islands of automation for fast, no-hassle, high data transfers. An entire application layer was developed in C to support communication services and modular expandability, device-independent access to the Fieldbus Data Link, besides running the application protocol. Add-ons like operational interlocks, further, eased the process of sample gas selection.
